Das in NO-Bulgarien am Haff von Durankulak gelegene Fundareal wurde 1974-2007 untersucht und ist bisher durch einen auf der "Großen Insel" gelegenen Tell [äneol. Hamangia-Kultur und Varna-Kultur, Coslogeni-Kultur der SBZ, FMA], Gruben der Cernavoda-Kultur sowie am Westufer befindliche Gräberfelder mit über 1.500 Bestattungen [Neol., Cu-Zeit, BZ, Hellenismus, Spätantike, FMA], Siedlungsreste [Neol., Äneol., FMA] sowie eisenzeitliche und hellenistische Opferplätze und Opfergruben und Altäre bekannt geworden [vgl. Monographien 1989, 2002]. Dieser Band widmet sich dem am Südhang der "Großen Insel" gelegenen hellenistischen Höhlenheiligtum der Kybele [Ende 4.-Anfang 2. Jhs v.Chr.] mit 6-8 m x 25 m großem Tempel und Opfergruben, seiner in Surveys erkundeten Umgebung, den Opferpraktiken und Funden. Vorgelegt werden Amphorenstempel, Graffiti, Dipinti, hellenistische Keramik, Tierknochen und Menschenknochen, Pflanzenreste sowie die hellenistischen und spätantiken Gräber vom Westufer. Das Kybeleheiligtum von Dionysopolis, vorrömische Kybeledenkmälern am Westpontos und Überlegungen zu hellenistischer Seefahrt im Pontos Euxinos werden vergleichend herangezogen. The site is situated in NE-Bulgaria at the Durankulak Lagoon and was investigated from 1974-2007. So far, it has manly been known for its tell situated on the "Big Island" [Chalcol. Hamangia and Varna Cultures, LBA Coslogeni Culture, EMA], pits of Cernavoda Culture and - situated on the western shore - cemeteries with more than 1,500 burials [Neol., Chalcol., BA, Hellenistic, Late Antique, EMA], settlements [Neol., Chalcol., EMA] and Iron Age and Hellenistic sacrificial sites including pits and altars [cf. monographs of 1989, 2002]. This volume is dedicated to the Hellenistic cave sanctuary of Cybele [late 4th to early 2nd century B.C.] found on the southern slope of the "Big Island" and featuring a temple of 6-8 m by 25 m and votive pits, to its surroundings explored in surveys, its ritual procedures, and finds. Individual papers deal with the amphora stamps, graffiti, dipinti, Hellenistic pottery, human and animal bones, plant remains, and the Hellenistic and Late Antique graves from the western shore. The sanctuary of Cybele at Dionysopolis, pre-Roman monuments of Cybele in the western Pontic region, and aspects of Hellenistic seafaring in the Pontos Euxinos are considered for comparison.
